The Gift of the Word

The Warrior Saints

St. George and the dragon

St. George

The artist depicts Saint George slaying the dragon, Saint Mercurius spearing Julian the Apostate, and Saint Theodore the Eastern dethroning the emperor Diocletian.  These figures share similarly dramatic imagery -- each haloed saint riding his mount, garment flying in the wind, while spearing his victim in the lower right register.  In this context, the theme of the warrior saint is meant to symbolize the triumph of Christianity.
